A Time To Ride is about the cross-country bicycle ride and marriage equality awareness campaign of married lesbian grandmothers Elisia and Carrie Ross-Stone, also known as the Rainbow Grannies. Their journey began on May 2 as they rode from San Francisco's Golden Gate Park 3,100 miles, arriving in New York City on July 10. In cities, both large and small, they held press conferences and rallies, lead bike rides, met with local elected officials and spoke to local gay and lesbian organizations. These were galvanizing events, encouraging locals to be aware and involved with the fight for marriage equality.

A Time To Ride captures the Grannies courageous and determined effort, continuing despite death threats, exhaustion, injuries and homesickness; there's a lot of drama in 3,100 miles. Viewers will meet families along the Ride's route whose lives have been negatively impacted by a lack of civil marriage rights, families who want to be protected, together, and safe. News and archival footage will be interwoven, providing context and illustrating why those public figures supporting discriminatory legislation must be removed from office. View

The Rainbow Ride 2004

In the Spring of 2003, tired of waiting for marriage equality to come to them, Carrie and Elisia set out on the first in a series of cross-country bicycle rides. The Rainbow Ride Across America is a cross-country bicycle ride and awareness campaign designed to educate and inform the community about the need for equal civil marriage rights for same-sex couples. One very important objective is to encourage people to register to vote and to ask them to discuss the equal civil marriage rights issue with friends and family. They strive to create many more advocates of equality who will vote in support of the community. The Ross-Stones are a traditional American family and are angry about others labeling them as deviant and less deserving.

The first Ride began in Augustine, FL and ended 2,500 miles and two and a half months later in San Diego, CA. In cities and towns along the way they talked to individuals and groups about equal civil marriage rights.

In 2004, the marriages in San Francisco and other locations made same-sex marriage a hot button issue and the second Rainbow Ride Across America even more timely and important. Some of the highlights include: a warm greeting from the mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah; an emotional protest outside the office of Colorado Representative Marilyn Musgrave (author of the Federal Marriage Amendment); a visit to Matthew Shepard's Laramie, Wyoming; a counter protested from Fred Phelps and fifty of his flock in Topeka, Kansas; a bike ride through Manhattan to end the ride before an excited crowd and five TV news crews.
